Returning for summer 2019: Youngstown State University Campus Recreation is proud to announce its second annual Pete & Penny’s Kid’s Summer Camp, a recreational day camp for children aged 6 (who have completed kindergarten) – 12. We offer fun recreational, sport, and leisure activities.

Our goal is to provide a supportive and engaging environment where our campers can learn and make new friends. Special attention is paid to the age and skill level of each camper, with professionals and college students on staff.

Registration is now open for all weeks of camp. To register, visit the Rec Store or visit us in the Administrative offices from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. For a tutorial of registering using the Rec Store, click here

Summer Camp Themes

Week 1: June 17 – June 21 | Wanderlust:  Pack your bags and join us as we travel the world, visiting 10 countries to explore some of the most popular games and recreational activities! Explore other cultures and attractions, collecting passport stamps as we journey to 6 continents. After learning about different countries, we will write postcards home about our travels. This week will include an intercontinental trip to the Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum and a visit from our friends at the Tyler History center.

Week 2: June 24 – June 28 | Happy Holidays: It’s beginning to look a lot like…Summer Camp! Ever wonder how other cultures ring in the New Year or how past cultures viewed the changing of the seasons?  Find out how different countries and cultures mark the milestones of life and other important events. Individuals from our campus and local community will help us appreciate traditions and rituals around the globe. We will visit the Ward Beecher Planetarium for the Let It Snow! Lights show.

Week 3: July 8 – July 12 | Save the Planet, Save the Day: Hey Planeteers! This week would even make Captain Planet proud! Discover and share new ways to be better caretakers of our planet. Participate in recreation and craft activities using recyclable items. Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart will all be covered in this fun and educational week focusing on the environment. With visits from environmental and earth science professors and a trip to the Mineral Museum, you will be one of the people who can save our planet!

Week 4: July 15 – July 19 | Artist at Work: Paint, craft, sculpt! View the world through the lens of an artist. This week of camp we will explore our artistic abilities with breaks to take part in indoor and outdoor recreation activities. We’ll be inspired by the art of others and make traditional crafts with the help of staff at the Butler Institute of American Art. We will also take part in theatre activities to explore all of our artistic sides.

Week 5: July 22 – July 26 | Superheroes (Here We Come to Save the Day!): Are you ready to save the world…one penguin at a time? Pick up where others have left off and become YSU’s mightiest heroes! Fight evil and save the day to show what true heroes are made of! Explore and discover recreation activities as your favorite superhero.  Enjoy visits to and from local superheroes who serve our community and country.

Week 6: July 29 – August 2 | Pete & Penny’s Olympics: Go for gold in Olympic-themed activities like Archery, Badminton and Curling. What Olympic event will put you on top of Mount Olympus? Campers will participate in recreation activities surrounding Olympic sports, and the Olympics itself. Learn about the many places that have hosted the Olympics as we focus on the host cities/countries. We will have a visit from Youngstown Phantoms hockey coaches and compete to find our personal bests in a range of athletic activities.
